Vintage, vineyard and cellar notes
Vintage 2011 was an incredibly challenging one. The coolest and wettest growing season on record created huge pressure on the vineyard team to deliver grapes good enough for the Dreadnought. Fortunately, our team didn’t miss their stride and through hard work and endeavour produced an amazing crop of beautifully ripened fruit; the growing season was typically long with slightly lower average sugars indicating a cooler season.
In the cellar, bunches were sorted and destemmed and then treated in our typical manner; no crushing, no yeast or additions and an extended time in vat. Upon pressing the wines stayed in barrel for a natural malolactic in the spring before bottling prior to vintage.
The 2011 Dreadnought has an abundance of sweet fruit, black pepper and savoury gamey notes which are typical of the style. The palate is elegant with supple fruit, vibrant acidity and a large presence of fine grained tannins emulating the structure of classical Northern Rhone. Stylish, finely balanced and rewarding in its youth, we see the 2011 Dreadnought developing gracefully in age as the fine boned structure becomes more apparent and great complexity ensues.
The first in a line of early 20th century battleships bestowed with the motto "fear god and dreadnought" and embodying a supreme combination of speed and power, Dreadnought denotes our steepest and most breathtaking hillside Syrah vineyards.
